Research Review for Quiz
Friday, February 9th
2
Introduction Paragraph
This is your first paragraph Start Hook – Quote, Anecdote, interesting fact – do not start with a question (you are too old for that) Then you need to add a transition sentence before your thesis Should be 3-5 sentences Your last sentence will be your Thesis statement Never add Facts (except for one as a hook) These will go in your body paragraph.
3
Thesis statement The last sentence of your introduction paragraph.
Only one sentence It will give your reader the topics of your body paragraphs. Do NOT go into specific details – you will save this for your body paragraphs.
4
Body paragraphs You will start with a topic sentence
Each paragraph should contain at least 2 details/examples that support your topic sentence. After you give an example, you should have commentary – this is how it relates to your topic sentence. Do not use I or Me or you in a research paper. If the details do not support you topic sentence – leave it out! It will be considered off topic. Your last sentence in each body paragraph is called a wrap up sentence – do not use the same sentence you used as your topic or repeat yourself.
5
Citing your information
You must have at least one internal citation in your paper. Make sure that you know how to cite internally. If you have a lead in with the author’s name, you do not need to put it in the parenthesis Ex: In the book night, Elie Wiesel explained his internal struggle to survive. “…………” (37). If you don’t have a lead in with the author’s name, you must add it to the internal citation. EX: “……….”(Wiesel 37). It looks weird, but the period goes at the very end.
6
Plagiarism Golden Rule: If you are in doubt, cite it!
Cite direct quotes – words you take directly from the book or article. You must quote it and cite it. Paraphrase – this is when you take the words from the book or article and put them in your own words. Since they are not your original thoughts – you must cite them. The only thing you don’t cite is common knowledge information Plagiarism – when you take credit for someone else's words or ideas
7
Conclusion Paragraph Opposite of introduction – Start specific and end general First sentence should be a rewording of the thesis statement Never start with in conclusion. Never add new examples, details or ideas in your last paragraph Your last sentence should be on how the Holocaust still effects people today.
