Reorganisation of support services
Establishment of NHLS 74% of hospitals implementing the PAAB system. Pilot of fully fledged hospital information system on hold DHIS fully implemented. 90 % of data for 2000 captured 4 teleradiology sites (Taung, Mafikeng, Klerksdorp, Lehurutshe hospitals) functioning. Equipment bought for 2 additional hospitals (Rustenburg and Ganyesa) Outsource distribution of pharmaceuticals from hospitals to clinics

Improve quality of care
16 districts (89%) have WITS teams. There are 110 WITS teams All provincial hospitals conduct patient satisfaction surveys. Need to share the tools used and the results. The Department intends developing standard evaluation tools to ensure comparability of results.

Interventions to decrease morbidity and mortality
87% of children under 1 (based on 1996 census figures) were fully immunised (Target was 70%) No polio cases reported. 4 districts (Brits, Moretele, Rustenburg, Odi) implementing IMCI program. Perinatal mortality rate has declined from 52 (Qtr1) to 42 (Qtr3) per 1000 livebirths. The reporting of maternal deaths is improving (83 compared to 54 in 1999).
