1 Honors Biology & Biology 2015-2016

2 Chapter 1 Biology = Study of living things

3 What is Life? 1. Biosphere – earth: includes all organisms, water, land, and air 2. Organisms – living things

4 What is Life? Spontaneous generation theory – the thought that living things come from non-living things (bees / flies) this theory has been dis-proven

5 Life Biogenesis – living things come from other living things they may or may not look like the parent(s) examples: butterflies, frogs, humans, plants

6 Life Organization: how do we put order to living things?
There are so many, we must have a way to know what we are talking about, no matter where we are in the world.

7 Living things Cell – smallest unit of living things. Some organisms are made of only 1 cell (unicellular) others are made up of many cells (multi-cellular) The cell is the “Basic Functional Unit of Life”

8 Living things Energy – ability to do work (this can change matter from one state to another) Ice to Water to Steam

9 Growth- increase in size of a living thing.
Living Things Growth- increase in size of a living thing. Development – change in shape and/or form of a living thing.

10 Living things Reproduction – making of new cells from living cells that already exist. Response – how living things react to an outside stimuli.

11 Living things Adaptation – response over a LONG term and then these responses are passed down from one generation to another. (appendix / hair)

12 Levels of Organization
Smallest to largest levels: Atom molecule cell tissues organ system organism population community ecosystem

13 Levels of Organization

14 Tissues – like kinds of cells working together for a function.
Organization Tissues – like kinds of cells working together for a function. Organs – several tissues (different types often) working together for a specific purpose.

15 System – several organs working together for a common purpose.
Organization System – several organs working together for a common purpose.

16 Organization Organism – A living thing, made up of several systems that can function on it’s own in a niche. Niche – a small environment where organisms do well and flourish. (area just their own)

17 What are? How do they fit in?
Predator / Prey - -

18 Scientific Method Making predictions, designing experiments, testing theory(s), observing and interpreting data.

19 Lab Report 1. Title- Name for the lab or experiment 2. Hypothesis/Purpose: - why we do the lab, what are we doing. Explained in 1 or 2 sentences. (logical guess)

20 Lab Report 3. Materials – Items and equipment needed for the lab. (often in a list format) 4. Procedure - How to do the lab (dry example or walk through)

21 Lab Report 5. Data / Observation – what is taking place, What do you see or observe? Charts, graphs, times, pictures, drawings, etc. Details, details, details!

22 Examples Variable: what changes in the experiment?
Control / constant: what we compare everything in that lab to Theory: is a well-tested hypothesis. Lasts over time…..

23 Lab Report 6. Conclusion - result, explanation for the lab results. Possible future lab ideas (new questions, new hypothesis and or theory)

24 Let’s try and see if it works…

25 Independent Knowledge Check
Read Chapter 1 in the Biology text book Summarize into bullet points the characteristics of living things (1 complete sentence per characteristic) Look at Figure 1-4 on page 9. Describe what you see in 2 sentences.

26 Homework: due ----- and ----- Candle/Observation Lab 100/100
You must design, execute, and complete a lab on the observation of a candle burning. Include each phase of the lab report and all the pertinent information for each area. You must observe the candle for a minimum of 10 minutes. You must have a drawing You must have details You must have color
