In Xenopus, where cell-cycle checkpoints initiate simultaneously with mesendoderm induction, promoters are co-regulated by p53 and Smad proteins. In mammals a p53-dependent regulatory loop creates a window of time during which embryonic progenitor cells are assessed prior to embarking on differentiation.
