14-2 Thin lenses

A lens is a transparent object that refracts light rays, causing them to converge or diverge to create an image.

2 basic types of lenses Convex (converging) lens thicker in the center
refracts parallel rays of light causing them to come together. Concave (diverging) lens thinner in the center refracts parallel rays of light so that they diverge.

The focal length, f, is defined as the distance an image will form from the lens when the object is placed at infinity.

Light travels both ways

Use Ray Diagrams to locate images
A ray is drawn parallel to the principal axis and passes through F. A ray is drawn through the focal point and emerges parallel to the principal axis. A ray is drawn through the optical center and continues

Convex lenses form real and virtual images

Concave lenses form virtual images

Thin Lens Equation Equation applies when the lens thickness is much smaller than its focal length.

Image formation by the eye
