4 How To Work On Sounds Follow the ear-training guide on page 71.
Try producing the sound by itself. Try the sound in single words. Try the sound in phrases and sentences. Become aware of the position and movements of your articulators. Practice for a short period each day. Gather your own practice materials.

5 Special Speech Problems
Common to find some phonemes misarticulated. Misarticulations are omissions, substitutions, and distortions. E.g. ask and axe E.g. soap and thoap E.g. well and wull Soap, not Thoap!

6 Ear-Training Exercise
Work with someone who pronounces sound correctly. Have your partner cover his or her mouth in some way so that you won’t be getting visual clues. Always go from an easier performance task to a more difficult task.

7 Recognition Train your ear to recognize whether the target sound occurs in a word spoken by the partner. Train your ear to recognize where the target sound is in a word (beginning, middle, end) when spoken by the partner.

8 Discrimination Train your ear to distinguish between correct and incorrect productions of the target sound as produced by your partner in random order, and be able to point out and distinguish the correct from the incorrect version. Train your ear to distinguish between correct and incorrect productions, but with the target sound at the beginning, then the end, then the middle of nonsense syllables. Train your ear to distinguish between correct and incorrect productions, but with the target sound in words, phrases, then sentences. Train your ear to distinguish between correct and incorrect productions, but with the target sound occurring at the beginning, end, and then the middle of actual words. E.g. I am going to say two words, tell me if they are the same or different. “soap” and “thoap” The answer is differently. E.g. I am going to say two words, tell me which one is correct, the first or second. “Thoap” and “Soap”. The second one is correct Page 72
