6 Process of sensation Energy stimulates sense organ
Receptor cell sends signal along sensory nerves Signals enter the brain

7 VISION

8 Vision Transduction Light passes through several parts of the eye like the pupil, iris and lens before it gets to the retina where transduction happens…. The information at the retina stimulates cones and rods to fire a signal to the bipolar cells which give info to the ganglion cells. This is sent to the optic nerve where it in turn sends it to the thalamus. We interpret this information in the visual cortex of the occipital lobe.

9 Sound

10 How do we hear? Sound waves reach the ear at the Tympanic membrane
Vibrating makes tiny bones hit each other Fluid moves in the cochlea The Basilar membrane ripples Fibers bend, receptor cells send signals through the auditory nerve. Impulse reaches temporal lobe and is interpreted as sounds.

11 MORE SOUND Frequency of sound is measured in Herz.
Loudness is measured in decibels

12 Skin Senses Nerve receptors distributed throughout the surface
Epidermis – Outer layer that is waterproof. Dermis – Has the blood vessels and receptors. Hypodermis – helps to keep your skin stuck to your muscle tissue.

13 The Process of Tasting Chemicals in food dissolve from salvia
2. Come into contact with taste receptors 3. Chemical interaction between food and taste cause adjacent neurons to fire 4. Nerve impulse goes to the brain.

14 How Does Smell Work As we breathe in odorants they bind with airborne molecules that then activate receptors located high in each nasal cavity in a patch of tissue called the olfactory epithelium The olfactory epithelium is packed with millions of receptor cells The axons from these millions of receptors go directly to the olfactory bulb From the olfactory bulb, messages are routed via the olfactory tract to the temporal lobes of the brain, resulting in awareness of smell!

15 Taste 5 taste qualities- sweet, sour, salty, bitter, umami
Flavor is a combination of taste and smell Taste receptor cells report stimulus to taste nerves and that is taken to the brain. Taste cells quickly adapt

16 Perception How something is deciphered based on memory, distance, and shape experience Information is gathered by the senses Takes place in brain
