5 - Lifting a child

6 - Pushing on a wall

Work or Not? a teacher teaching to her class No. There is no force being exerted on an object and the force is not acting over a distance.

8 Yes, the mouse is applying a force to an object and the force being applied over a distance. Both the force and the motion of the object are in the same direction.

9 - Lifting a child Yes, there is a force being applied to an object. The force is being applied over a distance (vertical). Both the force and the motion of the object are in the same direction.

10 - Pushing on a wall No, there is a force being applied, but the object (wall) is not moving.

11 What’s work? No Yes Yes No No
A scientist delivers a speech to an audience of his peers. A body builder lifts 350 pounds above his head. A father pushes a baby in a carriage. A mother carries her baby from room to room. A woman carries a 20 km grocery bag to her car? No Yes Yes A scientist… No, there is no object being moved. Body Builder… yes the motion of lifting and the force applied are in the same direction A father… Yes, the force applied to the carriage and the motion of the carriage are in the same direction. A mother… No, the force applied to the child to carry it is vertical, but the motion of the object is horizontal. A woman… No, the force applied to the grocery bag is vertical, but the motion is horizontal. No No

12 Calculating Work Work = Force x Distance

13 A man pushes a car 100 meters to a gas station using a force of 50 N
A man pushes a car 100 meters to a gas station using a force of 50 N. How much work is he doing?

14 Work = 50N x 100m Work = 5000N/m Work = 5000 J
A man pushes a car 100 meters to a gas station using a force of 50 N. How much work is he doing? Work = 50N x 100m Work = 5000N/m Work = 5000 J

15 A worker applied 32N of force to move a box 5. 1 feet toward a wall
A worker applied 32N of force to move a box 5.1 feet toward a wall. It takes his 15 seconds to finish. How much work has he done?

16 A worker applied 32N of force to move a box 5. 1 meters toward a wall
A worker applied 32N of force to move a box 5.1 meters toward a wall. It takes his 15 seconds to finish. How much work has he done? Work = 32n X 5.1m Work = 163.2N/m Work = 163.2J

17 A weight lifter holds a barbell over his head using a force of 200N
A weight lifter holds a barbell over his head using a force of 200N. How much work is being done?

18 A weight lifter holds a barbell over his head using a force of 200N
A weight lifter holds a barbell over his head using a force of 200N. How much work is being done? Work = 200N x 0m Work = 0N/m Work = 0 J

19 Complete the shape labeled “Questions I still have about work…”
Allow students about 1-2 minutes to complete this section.

20 Quick Write: Which character is not doing any work
Quick Write: Which character is not doing any work? Defend your answer using complete sentences. Fido Cleo Cleo the cat is not doing any work because although the force of the pull is to the left, the motion is to the right. Both force and motion need to be in the same direction. 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4
