4 Determining Requirements
Determine the occupancy classification by referring to the occupancy definitions in Chapter 6. Determine if the building or structure is new or existing. Determine the occupant load. Determine the hazard of the contents.

5 Determining Requirements (cont)
Refer to applicable occupancy chapter of the code, Chapters See also chapters 1-4 and as needed for general requirements. Determine any occupancy subclassification or special use conditions (day care, healthcare, hotels, etc.) Proceed through the applicable occupancy chapter to verify compliance.

Where two or more requirements apply, the occupancy specific chapter will apply. Where two or more occupancy chapters apply, the most restrictive will control.

7 Example A jewelry retail sales store occupying all of the 12th floor of a multitenant structure uses 5000 ft2 (95%) for sales. It was in place prior to the implementation of this code.

8 Example (cont) Existing Mercantile (Chapter 36)
According to Chapter 36, this is a Class B mercantile facility. Don’t forget high rise requirements (Chapter 11) Chapter 36 will refer reader mostly to chapters 1-4 and 7-11. Therefore, chapters 1-4, 7-11, and 36 will contain the applicable requirements for this facility.
