Valence electrons are electrons in the HIGHEST ENERGY LEVEL How many valence electrons are in oxygen? O8 1s2 2s2 2p4 8 valence electrons!

5 Valence Electrons Why are they important? They tell us:
the chemical properties of an element The group an element is in Elements in same group  same number of valence electrons  similar chemical properties

Steps: Find the element on the periodic table Identify the noble gas that came before it Write the noble gas symbol in brackets Write the rest of the electron configuration
