2 Division of Labor & The First Level
(w)Within living things, there are divisions of labor. (w)Division of labor means that the work (labor) of keeping the organism alive is divided (division) among different parts. Each part has a job to do and as each part does its special job, it works in harmony with all the other parts. THE JOB OF THE SMALLEST THING BUILDS ONT THE NEXT LEVEL!

3 Just like stair steps… There are different LEVELS to how one living thing is made, as well as where it fits into this world. The arrangement of specialized parts within a living thing is sometimes referred to as levels of organization. We will discuss the levels from least complex to most complex!

4 1. CELL (w)The Cell is the building block of living things
1. CELL (w)The Cell is the building block of living things. This is the level where LIFE begins! There are LOTS of Different Kinds of cells. Here are two examples. Can you guess what kind? Nerve Cells Skin Cells

5 2. Tissues In any multi-cellular organism, cells rarely work alone. (w)Cells that are similar in structure and function are usually joined together to form tissues. This applies to all living things… plants too!

6 Tissue Continued. Tissue level
Group of cells and the materials surrounding them that work together on one task (w) 4 basic tissue types: epithelium, muscle, connective tissue, and nerve

7 Types of Animal Tissue

8 Tissue Cont. Epithelial tissues line the cavities and surfaces of blood vessels and organs throughout the body. muscle tissues : skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscles. Muscle tissue provides a) posture and body support b) locomotion and c) heat production. connective tissue, provides a transport system within our body for oxygen and other important substances nervous tissue consists of nerves made up of nerve cells called neurons. They carry out the body’s response to stimuli.

9 3. Organs (w)When a bunch of different types of tissues work together, they form an organ. There are many organs in the body. How many can you name??

10 4. Organ Systems Each organ in your body is part of an organ system, (w) a group of organs that work together to perform a major function. System - collection of related organs with a common function, sometimes an organ is part of more than one system

11 5. ORGANISM (w)An entire living thing (can even be unicellular)
Humans, plants, animals, and microorganisms like bacteria
