1. Lesson 6: Swanage Case Study
Lesson Objective:
To produce a detailed case study on an area of coastal management

2. Where is Swanage?
Using the maps- locate Swanage Bay Geographically.

3. What are the options?
In the UK, local councils pay for sea defences. Some may get money from the Government or Environment Agency if there is a flood risk. There are 4 choices councils can make:
Hold the line use sea defences to stop erosion EXPENSIVE
Advance the line use sea defences to move the coast further into the sea VERY EXPENSIVE
Strategic Retreat gradually let the coast erode and move people away from risks. This may involve compensation for some people
Do nothing let nature take its course.
These choices can cause conflicts. Choices 3 and 4 will see people loose land, homes and businesses. One stretch of coastline may involve several choices.
