1 Lesson 6: Swanage Case Study
Lesson Objective: To produce a detailed case study on an area of coastal management

2 Where is Swanage? Using the maps- locate Swanage Bay Geographically.

3 What are the options? In the UK, local councils pay for sea defences. Some may get money from the Government or Environment Agency if there is a flood risk. There are 4 choices councils can make: Hold the line use sea defences to stop erosion EXPENSIVE Advance the line use sea defences to move the coast further into the sea VERY EXPENSIVE Strategic Retreat gradually let the coast erode and move people away from risks. This may involve compensation for some people Do nothing let nature take its course. These choices can cause conflicts. Choices 3 and 4 will see people loose land, homes and businesses. One stretch of coastline may involve several choices.
