2. What is an Earthquake?
Earthquakes are sudden shaking of the earth caused by massive rocks, called plates, moving under the earth's surface.
As the plates bump and grind into each other, the pressure builds as they attempt to pass each other.
The pressure builds and the plates shoot past each other breaking off to pieces.
Above the Earth's surface, the land shakes and buildings crumble.

3. Causes of Earthquakes The edge of one plate is pushed under another.
Plates can also push together and that can cause the rock to bend and fold. 
It happens when the plates push together. 
It also happens when plates push over another. 
Earthquakes happen near cracks in the earth called faults. 

4. Earthquake Effects What happens after an earthquake hits:
The power could go out.
After shock can happen. It is a mini earthquake after a big earthquake.
Land can collapse and roads can break.
Homes can fall apart.
Pipes can break and gas can come out of the pipes.

6. Interesting facts about Earthquakes
There are 20 plates on earth.
Plates are called tectonic plates.
Sometimes a tectonic plate pushes over a another and that is called a thrust fault.
When tectonic plates separate the middle of it is called the Rift Zone.
