3. Bell-ringer: answer the following questions
Review:
1. Over the past week how did you respect another person or adult? How did you respect their feelings?
Today’s Lesson will focus on RESPECT FOR DIFFERENCES:

3. Do you think being different from people is a positive or negative attribute?

4. Jagtar—respect for Differences
To Josh and Morgan, the new student in their class looks like a boy, but has pinned-up long hair like a girl and wears something on his head. Their teacher explains that Jagtar Singh is from India, and tells the class to make him feel welcome. But Josh, to Morgan’s amusement, can’t resist making fun of Jagtar, even though Amy asks how Josh would feel if someone made fun of him. Josh, Morgan and Amy learn that Jagtar wears his hair long as part of his religion, and that his last name Singh means “lion,” which Josh says it cool.

5. Discussion questions: in groups or together as a class 5-7 minutes
-Why do some kids make fun of people who are different? Why is it important to respect differences?
-Suppose someone made fun of you for being different. How would that make you feel?
-What are some ways to show respect to people who are different from you?

7. discuss what people should in these situations
If you had a classmate who didn’t speak much English, how would you show respect for him?
A. Laugh at Him?
B. Tell him he shouldn’t come to class until he learns to speak better.
C. Offer to help him learn to speak better English
If you and your friend play chess together and you beat him all the time, how would you show respect for his feelings?
A. Suggest he play with someone else
B. Ask if he would like you to help him with his game
C. Refer to him as a “loser”

 If you had a classmate who always came to class wearing a scarf that covered her hair, how would you show respect for her?
A. Get to know her better and learn the reason she wears the head scarf.
B. Make fun of her for wearing a scarf all the time.
C. Ignore Her
If you had a friend who was a vegetarian, how would you show respect for her?
A. Offer to share your meat sandwich with her
B. Tease her about eating “rabbit food”
C. Ask her to tell you about her favorite vegetarians foods

9. Survey the class—who is different from you?
The fact is even though we know everyone is different from us, sometime it’s kind of hard to be respectful of our differences. As a class find out how many people are different from you.
