3. A VILLAGE WITH A PAST, A FAMILY WITH A FUTURE

4. Mauda is 89 and lives in Kagarama - a village in Uganda.
She lives with her six grandchildren. Sadly their parents died of HIV/AIDS and she is the only person left to look after them.
Extra detail to add: Kagarama housed a soldiers’ barracks during the Rwandan genocide in The soldiers brought HIV/AIDS with them and now many women in Kagarama are affected by the virus.

5. ‘Kagarama village is far away from the nearest water source, about half a day’s walk there and back. The children would go and get the water, making them late for school all the time. Their progress suffered.’

6. The church knew Mauda’s family was in trouble
The church knew Mauda’s family was in trouble. So they made them a priority when they built rainwater tanks in the village.
Now the family has enough water to drink and wash with. And there’s no long walk!

The bottom photo is of Bonita, one of Mauda’s grandchildren. She is 14 years old. She says ‘The person I love the most is God and the second is my grandmother. She looks after us.’ Bonita would like to be a nurse in the future. She studies hard and her best subject is English. Her worry is that her grandmother is ageing, and when her grandmother dies she and her siblings and cousins will be left on their own.

7. ‘To me water is life. It means getting clean water to drink, and wash with. It means preparing food for the family. I take good care of our tank, so that it will serve me for a long time.’
