In June 2005 meetings were held with RMH’s House Manager Helen Tartellin, Chairman of the Board George Colbran & Townsville Hospital’s Director of Operations, Sean Drummond. A proposal by Dr. Linda Ashton, with budget & draft designs was accepted. Making a feature wall would provide JCU pre-service teachers with valuable experience in collaborative public art making. … the site was selected …

If children had to be hospitalised
J u s t i f i c a t i o n … Many Qld regional families with very sick children come to stay at the newly constructed Ronald McDonald House in Townsville’s Hospital Complex while their little ones receive medical treatment . . . The design and construction of a large illuminated free-standing stained-glass wall would identify “The House” and provide a colourful entry point at all times of the day and night. If children had to be hospitalised there would be a unique visual & tactile treat on their first or subsequent visits.

Early design drafts began, incorporating figures typically drawn by children and three words which would identify THE HOUSE as a special place June 10/05

Though approved in principle, the project needed
significant sponsorship to become a reality. So …. armed with the first two prototypes of glass blocks … a laptop & a letter of introduction from Ronald McDonald House, the project manager sought in kind support, discounts and material donations. The list of contributors grew steadily & for an outlay of $8000, RMH would have its feature wall valued at over $30000 thanks to corporate & community generosity ….
