1 With your neighbor… Explain why saltwater is a mixture and NOT a compound. Hint: Look back at your notes from the PowerPoint.

2 Solutions and Solubility
Page 121

3 Salt (NaCl) is a compound. Water (H20) is a compound.
Answer: Salt (NaCl) is a compound. Water (H20) is a compound. Salt + Water = saltwater NOT a new substance! Salt & water can be physically separated by distillation.

4 Solution Kool-aid drink is a solution when mixed.
A homogeneous mixture of 2 or more substances uniformly dispersed throughout a single phase- one substance dissolves in the other. Kool-aid drink is a solution when mixed.

5 Dissolve When the solute disappears and is absorbed into the solvent.
Stirring/swirling/shaking or breaking solute into smaller pieces helps the solute to dissolve.

6 Solute in a solution, the substance that dissolves in the solvent.
Kool-aid drink mix (powder) Sugar Solute

7 Solvent in a solution, the substance in which the solute dissolves. water

8 Solubility The ability of a substance to dissolve in a solvent at a given temperature and pressure (temperature and pressure affect solubility) Soluble= able to dissolve Insoluble= not able to dissolve

9 Concentration The amount of a particular substance in a given quantity of a mixture. Concentrated- large amount of solute dissolved in solvent. Diluted- small amount of solute dissolved in solvent.

10 Saturated A solution in which the solvent is no longer able to dissolve any more solute at the given temperature and pressure.

11

12 Homogeneous a mixture that has the same uniform appearance & composition throughout. When the sugar & Kool-aid are dissolved completely, the solute is evenly spread out throughout the mixture.

13 Heterogeneous a mixture that visibly has different substances or phases. When ice was added a solid was visible in the liquid and the mixture was not the same throughout.

14 Assess – How much did you learn?
What was the solute in the demonstration? What was the solvent in the demonstration? What helped the solute to dissolve? Would you like to sample the solution?
