2. Two Types of Personal Days
Non-discretionary - those days that can’t be helped (personal illness, illness of a child, death in the family, unexpected emergency, etc.)
Discretionary – planned days at the discretion of the employee (vacation/travel, First Monday, shopping, friend’s wedding, day of R&R, etc.)

3. Limitations on the use of discretionary days:
Requests for discretionary leave shall be considered on a first-come, first served basis.
The employee must submit a written request (via – date and time stamped) to the immediate supervisor or designee for the use of discretionary leave at least five days in advance.
In deciding whether to approve or deny discretionary leave, the supervisor shall not ask or consider the reasons for the leave. However, the supervisor shall consider the impact of the employee’s absence on the educational program, District operations, as well as the availability of substitutes.
Discretionary use of personal leave shall not exceed five consecutive work days.

4. Discretionary Leave shall not be allowed on the following days:
Blackout days (see calendar for specific dates):
First or last instructional day
Day before or after a school holiday
Days scheduled for end-of-semester or end-of-year exams
Days scheduled for state mandated assessments
Professional/staff development days
Discretionary use on these days will result in a full dock of an employee’s daily rate.
(Non-discretionary use on these days may require substantiation.)

5. Although the numbers below are not necessarily hard/fast numbers, the general availability or substitute allotment is as follows:
High School (45,50)
Middle School (40,48)
Elementary (66-99)
