1 The periodic table

2 Let’s sort… cut out all 19 puzzle pieces
arrange the pieces into rows and columns according to their properties identify as many trends as you can keep in mind that one of the puzzle pieces is missing sketch the missing piece showing all its properties

3 Learning goals We are learning to identify patterns in the periodic table. We are learning to identify the first 20 elements of the periodic table.

4 origins Dmitri Mendeleev mid to late 1800s
found patterns and was able to group elements together we use a table based on his work

5 Row, row, row your … seven horizontal rows called periods
hydrogen and helium are in Period 1 potassium is the first of 18 elements in Period 4

6 Let’s group it! 18 vertical columns called groups (also called a chemical family) elements within a group share certain physical and chemical properties carbon (C) is in Group 14 common to refer to a group by the first element in it. Group 14 is also called the carbon group.

7 organization

8 Group 1: Alkali metals Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr
silver-grey in colour; malleable and ductile, and conduct electricity and heat low melting points soft enough to cut with a knife react easily with water and air

9 Group 2: Alkaline earth metals
Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra shiny silvery-white somewhat reactive metals low melting and boiling points

10 Group 17: halogens F, Cl, Br, I all are non-metals
gases (Br liquid; I solid) noticeable colour chlorine, bromine, and iodine can be used as disinfectants

11 Group 18: Noble gases He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, Rn
exist naturally as colourless gases will glow with bright colours if an electric current is passed through them neon light inert – not chemically reactive

12 Ahhhhhh, I c… element name atomic number element symbol atomic mass

13 Standard Atomic Notation
Identifies important information Atomic mass 4 He Atomic number 2

14 Learning goals We are learning to identify patterns in the periodic table. We are learning to identify the first 20 elements of the periodic table.
