1 Graphing Calculator Lesson 1: Graphing Lines and Finding Intercepts
This entire power point will be posted on the website and in Focus for you to access later if needed.

2 Finding the Standard Viewing Window
TI 1.) Press ZOOM 2.) Press #6 for Zstandard The standard window is 10 units in each direction with a scale of 1 unit (this means there is a tick mark every unit) CASIO 1.) Press MENU 2.) Press #3 for GRAPH 3.) Press SHIFT F3 4.) Press F3 again to choose STD On the Casio, the F buttons will choose from a menu that appears at the bottom of the screen. The standard window is the same as on a TI (see description to the left).

3 GRAPHINg a line TI 1.) Press Y= (top left)
2.) In the line for y1, enter in 3x – 5. For the ‘x’, use the button labeled X,T, ϴ which is next to the ALPHA key. 3.) Press GRAPH on the upper right CASIO 1.) Press EXIT to return to the y= window 2.) In the line for y1, enter 3x – 5. Use the button labeled X, ϴ, T for your ‘x’. This is located under the ALPHA key. 3.) Press EXE when done 4.) Press F6 for DRAW

4 FINDINg the y-intercept
TI 1.) Press 2nd and then TRACE to access the CALC menu 2.) Press #1 for VALUE 3.) Enter in x=0 (since the x coordinate of the y-intercept is always zero) 4.) Press ENTER You should see the point (0,-5) appear at the bottom. CASIO 1.) Press F5 for G-Solv 2.) Press F4 for Y-ICPT You should see the point (0, -5) appear at the bottom.

5 FINDING THE x-intercept
TI 1.) Press 2nd and TRACE to access the CALC menu 2.) Press #2 for ZERO (this is another word for the x-intercept) 3.) Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the LEFT of the x-int and press ENTER 4.) Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the RIGHT of the x-intercept and press ENTER 5.) Press ENTER again to move through the GUESS You should see the point (1.667, 0) appear at the bottom. CASIO 1.) Press F5 for G-Solv 2.) Press F1 for ROOT (this is another word for the x-intercept) You should see the point (1.667, 0) appear at the bottom.

6 Deleting a LinE to Graph another
1.) Press y = 2.) Press CLEAR 3.) Enter (1/2)x + 15 into the y1 line 4.) Press GRAPH You should not be able to see this line at all even though the calculator has graphed it. Why not? CASIO 1.) Press EXIT to return to y= window 2.) Use the arrows to highlight the y1 line 3.) Press F2 to delete and confirm by pressing F1 when prompted 4.) Enter (1÷2)x + 15 into the y1 line 5.) Press EXE 6.) Press F6 for DRAW You should not be able to see this line at all even though the calculator has graphed it. Why not?

7 Changing the viewing window
TI 1.) Press WINDOW 2.) Change Xmin to -35 and change Ymax to 20 3.) Press GRAPH This changes the part of the coordinate plane we see. Note how squished together the tick marks are. CASIO 1.) Press F3 for V-Window 2.) Change Xmin to -35 and press EXE when done 3.) Change Ymax to 20 and press EXE when done 4.) Press EXIT 5.) Press F6 for DRAW This changed the part of the coordinate plane we see. Note how sqished together the tick marks are.

8 Changing the scaling TI 1.) Press WINDOW
2.) Changle Xscl and Yscl to 5 3.) Press GRAPH This places our tick marks 5 units apart. You can always choose a scale appropriate for your graph. CASIO 1.) Press F3 2.) Change Xscale to 5 and press EXE 3.) Change Yscale to 5 and press EXE 4.) Press EXIT 5.) Press F6 for DRAW This places our tick marks 5 units apart. You can always choose a scale appropriate for your graph.

9 Restoring the window to standard
TI 1.) Press ZOOM 2.) Press #6 for Zstandard It is especially important to know how to do this if you are using a borrowed calculator since the person using it before you might have left it with a weird window. CASIO 1.) Press F3 2.) Press F3 again for STD

10 ACTIVITY Complete this activity to practice and reinforce the skills we went over in the lesson today. Ask your neighbor or raise your hand if you get stuck. (You can get help now but you won’t be able to get it in the middle of a test!) Write your answers on a separate piece of paper to turn in. 1.) Graph the line y = -4x + 5. Then find the x-intercept and write it on your paper. 2.) Graph the line y = 0.2x. Then find the y-intercept and write it on your paper. 3.) Suppose you want to graph the line 4x + 2 y = 2. First, solve the equation for y. (That is, get y by itself since this is the only way to input it into the calculator.) Write your equation on your paper. 4.) Graph your equation from #3 and find the x-intercept. Write the x-intercept on your paper. 5.) Graph y = 2x – 15. Adjust the viewing window so that you can see BOTH intercepts. Write your viewing window on your paper. State: Xmin, Xmax, Ymin, and Ymax. (There are many good answers for this question.)
