1 Ephesians Class Schedule
9/30/18 Eph 5:3-5 R. Henderson

2 The Christ life in us* 4:31-5:14
our relationship to One Another 4:31-5:2 put away the old life 4:31 kindness & forgiveness to one another 4:32 how are we to be imitators of God 5:1-2 our relationship to Morality 5:3-5 conduct and speech 5:3-4 inheritance in God’s kingdom 5:5 our relationship to Mockers 5:6-14 let no one deceive you 5:6 do not be partakes with them 5:7 once darkness but now you are light 5:8-10 a command about participation 5:11-14 * adapted from McCalley

3 1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children;
2  and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma. 3  But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; 4  and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5  For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

4 3  But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; the main verb in verse 3 is “even be named” even be named – onomazō – has various meaning like: a. to be professed as in 2 Tim 2:19 b. to mean designated as in Luke 6:13 c. to be known as in Rom15:20 This (Rom 15:20) meaning to be known would teach these pagan vices should not exist among Christians. McCalley

5 3  But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; But - de - on the contrary or on the other hand These three nouns (immorality or impurity or greed) describe a life that is contrary to our new life in Christ immorality - porneia - fornication, lewdness, or any sexual sin part of the list in Col 3:5, Gal 5:19 all impurity - akatharsia - uncleanness or filth in physical or moral sense – also in Col 3:5, Gal 5:19 greed - pleonexia – covetousness lit., "a desire to have more" – also in Col 3:5

6 3  But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; as is proper among (for) saints proper - prepō - it signifies it is fitting or it becometh see Heb 2:10, Heb 7:26 just as it is befitting to saints (Wuest) Therefore it is “not proper” or befitting for saints to be known by these sins What are saints to be known by? see Matt 7:16-20, 2 Cor 3:1-3

7 4  and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. the focus now addresses the speech that should not be a part of a believer’s life “and” connects these three speech attributes with the verb from v:3 (not even be named) What does “which” refer to? the verb in verse 4 is “are fitting:” are fitting - anēkō - it is fit, proper, becoming see Col. 3:18 This kind of speech is not fitting for the believer!

8 The speech that is not fitting is as follows:
4  and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. The speech that is not fitting is as follows: filthiness - which refers to both word and action. Its closest synonym is found in Col 3:8 silly talk - from mōros; literally fool talk - which is foolishness and sin together – see Eph 4:29 coarse jesting – eutrapelia - used in a bad sense meaning a scoffer, a sneerer, or a coarse joker

9 but rather giving of thanks
4  and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. but rather giving of thanks but rather – the idea is that of a strong contrast see Rom 14:13, 1 Tim. 6:2 giving of thanks - eucharistía – thanksgiving, in Eph 5:4 grateful speech or discourse. see Col 4:2 but thanksgiving rather let it be named D. Wheeler but instead voice your thankfulness [to God] Amp

10 you know with certainty - lit: you know and recognize
5  For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. For this you know with certainty - lit: you know and recognize for this you know absolutely and experientially Wuest The word "know" is oida which speaks of absolute, beyond the peradventure of a doubt knowledge, a knowledge that is self-evident. The word translated above, "recognizing," is ginōskō which speaks of knowledge gained by experience.

11 Now the focus will be on the character of the person!
5  For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Now the focus will be on the character of the person! no – pas – every, all; none excluded immoral - pornos - a man who indulges in fornication, (same as v:3) impure person - akathartos – impure person, morally unclean covetous man - pleonektēs – covetous person; greedy of gain

12 idolater - eidōlolatrēs - a servant or worshiper of idols
5  For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. who is – lit: that is idolater - eidōlolatrēs - a servant or worshiper of idols see 1 Cor 5:9-11 Who are these persons described in verse 5? There is a level of conduct that reveals an unsaved condition, and verse 5 describes that condition McCalley

13 has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God
5  For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God parallel verse in 1 Cor 6:9-11 9a  Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? 9b Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10  nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. 11  Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
