1 AP Statistics Exam Overview

2 Time 3 hours There is one 90 minute multiple choice section
50% of grade There is one 90 minute free response section

3 Multiple Choice 40 questions
Points are NOT deducted for incorrect answers No points are awarded for unanswered questions Score is only based off of the number of questions answered correctly Don’t leave any blank Use process of elimination

4 Free Response Graded off of COMMUNICATION AND STATISTICAL KNOWLEDGE
50% of each category 5 questions Each question is designed to be answered in 12 minutes 1 investigative task Designed to be answered in 30 minutes

5 Free Response Scoring Holistic approach- evaluated off of a complete package and overall quality 0 – 4 Rubric

6 Score of 0 Statistical Knowledge Communication
Shows little to no understanding of statistical components Provides no explanation of a legitimate strategy

7 Score of 1 Statistical Knowledge Communication
Shows limited understanding of the problem’s statistical components by failing to identify important components Provides minimal or unclear explanation of what was done or why it was done, and explanation may not match the presented solution Shows little ability to organize a solution and may use irrelevant information Fails to use diagrams or plots, or uses them incorrectly Misuses or fails to use appropriate statistical techniques States an incorrect conclusion or fails to state a conclusion Has arithmetic errors that result in unreasonable answers

8 Score of 2 Statistical Knowledge Communication
Shows some understanding of the problems’ statistical components Provides some explanation of what was done, but explanation may be vague and difficult to interpret and terminology may be somewhat inappropriate Shows little in the way of a relationship among these components Uses diagrams in an incomplete or ineffective way, or diagrams may be missing Uses some appropriate statistical techniques but misses or misuses others States a conclusion that is incomplete May have arithmetic errors that result in unreasonable answers

9 Score of 3 Statistical Knowledge Communication
Shows substantial understanding of the problem’s statistical components Provides a clear but not perfectly organized explanation, using correct terminology, of what was done and why, but explanation may be slightly incomplete Synthesizes a relationship among these components, perhaps with minor gaps May miss necessary assumptions or caveats Uses appropriate statistical techniques Uses diagrams or plots when appropriate to aid in describing the solution May have arithmetic errors but answers are still reasonable States a conclusion that follows from the analysis but may be somewhat incomplete

10 Score of 4 Statistical Knowledge Communication
Shows complete understanding of the problem’s components Provides a clear, organized, and complete explanation, using correct terminology, of what was done and why Synthesizes a correct relationship among these components, perhaps with novelty and creativity States appropriate assumptions and caveats Uses appropriate and correctly executed statistical techniques Uses diagrams or plots when appropriate to aid in describing the solution May have minor arithmetic errors but answers are still reasonable States an appropriate and complete conclusion in context

11 What does it take to get 3-5?
Getting 80% correct will get you a 5 Getting 70% correct will get you a 4 Getting 60% correct will get you a 3 If the exam is very difficult and students in general are scoring lower, you may only need a 50% to get a 3 and so on…. It all depends…..
