1 State of matter changing to another
Bell work 1. List the 3 states of matter. 2. What is a phase change? Solid Liquid Gas State of matter changing to another

2 3. SOLID A solid is matter that has definite volume and shape.
Example: Put a sneaker in a box. It stays the same.

3 LIQUID 4. A liquid takes the shape of any container. It has definite volume and indefinite shape. Example: Pour juice into a glass. What happens? It takes the shape of the glass.

4 Gas 5. Gas is matter that has indefinite shape and volume. Gases take the shape of whatever container they are in . Example: The air all around us is a gas.

5 6. A phase change is a change in state (solid, liquid, or gas)
Melting – solid to liquid Freezing – liquid to solid Evaporation – liquid to gas Condensation – gas to liquid Sublimation – solid to gas Deposition – gas to solid

6 Is this a solid, a liquid, or a gas
Is this a solid, a liquid, or a gas? Can you find more than one type of matter in any of the pictures?

7 gas evaporation condensation liquid melting freezing solid sublimation deposition

8 Temperature 12. Temperature is the measurement of how fast the particles are moving. Remember: Not all substance freeze, melt or evaporate at the same temperature. Water will freeze at zero degrees Celsius. However Alcohol will not freeze at this temperature. MAIN MENU PREVIOUS NEXT

9 Pressure 13. Pressure is defined as the force the gas exerts on a given area of the container. MAIN MENU PREVIOUS NEXT

10 14. Gas Laws - Boyle’s Law Charles Boyle determined that for the same amount of a gas without changing the temperature, if we increase the volume, the pressure goes down. pressure volume MAIN MENU PREVIOUS NEXT

11 15. Charles’ Law Jacques Charles found that as the volume increases the temperature also increases. If the temperature decreases than the volume also decreases. volume temperature MAIN MENU PREVIOUS NEXT
