There are modifications to this chart in the addition of French as a Second Language for all Groups. Activities may be completed at any time during a student’s years in the secondary school program.
Students, in collaboration with their parents, will decide how they will complete the community involvement requirement. They may use their annual education plan to identify possible activities.
May take place in a variety of settings - businesses, not-for-profit organizations, public sector institutions (hospitals), and informal settings; students may not fulfill the requirement through activities that are counted towards a credit, through paid work, or by assuming duties normally performed by a paid employee.
To be complete outside student’s normal instructional hours - can be in lunch hours, after school, on weekends or during school holidays.
Completion of the required hours must be confirmed by the organization or persons supervising the activities.
The ministry will provide a resource guide for community involvement.

11. Choosing Courses
Students in collaboration parents, teachers, guidance counsellors, student success/support teachers and administrators
Students should do an honest self-assessment, matching their ability with their interests and aptitudes
Choose a combination of course types to support different learning interests and styles
Remember there are many pathways to initial post-secondary destinations
Keeping in mind that both Applied and Academic courses are equally rigorous and both course pathways prepare the student for the next level of high school, decisions need to be based on the best style of learning for the student and on interests, not on ability.
Emphasize that being able to choose between two course types and two different approaches to learning should be based on which course will provide the student with better chances for SUCCESS in gr. 9.

SHSM students are recognised at graduation ceremonies
A SHSM bursary has been established.

Advanced Placement
Designed for highly motivated students
Achievement – possibly earn transfer credit (0.5 to 1.0) at a Canadian University or advanced placement at a College in the U.S. for that subject area.
Colleges/Universities do not see that you have taken an AP course on your transcript or exam for admissions, it is applied for after acceptance into a program.
Restrictions apply, you should check specific Universities/Colleges for their policy.
Preparation – develop better study habits, improve writing skills, sharpen problem solving skills.
Confidence – tackle academic challenges.

18. Cooperative Education
This program is for students going to university, college, apprenticeship or work.
Allows students to earn grade 11 or 12 credits in a workplace setting while exploring a career of their choice.
Two co-op credits can be counted towards the compulsory groups.

19. Apprenticeship & Skilled Trades
The OYAP program – students earn high school credits and hours towards their apprenticeship in a trade.

Students focus on education and career/life interests, choices, goals and plans through the 4-step inquiry process
