4 Location The University of Wuppertal is situated in Nordrhein- Westfalen (NRW), one of the 16 federal states of Germany, and it borders on the Netherlands and Belgium in the West. 8 The city has about 375,000 inhabitants and is located in the narrow valley of the river Wupper in the lovely area of countryside called the Bergisches Land. 9 Floating through Wuppertal at a height of between 8 and 12 metres! The city´s landmark, the Wuppertal suspension railway, is one of the world´s safest and most comfortable means of transport. It carries over 23 million passengers each year.

16 The Studentenwerk (HSW) runs the dining facilities at the university. Lunch is taken in Cafeterias and the Mensa, where A variety of cheap meals and foods is offered. 17 These language courses prepare beginners, inter- mediate as well as advanced learners for studying at a German university. There are also specialised courses for professionals in the fields of economics, technology and the humanities. 25 Unihalle Wuppertal This multipurpose arena is used for sports, culture and other events such as the annual International Mixed Basketball Tournament of the University of Wuppertal.

27 CRISTA CRISTA is a limb-scanning satellite experiment designed and developed by the University of Wuppertal to measure infrared emissions of the earth's atmosphere. (CRISTA = CRyogenic Infrared Spectrometers and Telescopes for the Atmosphere.)

31 Electrical Engineering Our research activities are interdisciplinary and deal with power electronics, electrical machines, control theory, robotics, digital signal processing and electronic circuits in industrial automation and automotive applications.

48 Accommodation There are four on-campus halls of residence with a total capacity of about 1000 places.

49 Accommodation The rooms are rented unfurnished in the form of single apartments and flats designed for flat-sharing. The furnished apartments for exchange students are 20m² with kitchenette and shower/toilet and cost 237 Euro per month. Cable-TV, internet-access and laundry facilities are available.

50 Accommodation Students can either live in one of these residences or rent a room/apartment off campus. The housing market in Wuppertal is quite good. Popular areas to live for students are the Nordstadt and the Südstadt of Wuppertal-Elberfeld, where apartment prices vary between 200 and 250.

53 LEISURE Nordrhein-Westfalen is one of the most important cultural landscapes in Europe. Three-quarters of the state is countryside with 14 nature reserves more than 200 lakes and dams and numerous castles with moats. In the 30 big cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants there are more than 150 theaters and a large number of renowned opera and concert houses; more than 665 museums are to be found in the state.
