Individualism, optimism and enterprise began to replace Puritan values by 18th c.
The further they were from England, the more they valued money over organized religion
Great Awakening was a way of reviving earlier extreme piety over the rationalism of the enlightenment

3. The Great Awakening Goals of the Great Awakening
Being open to Holy Spirit more important than intellect
Suggested it was open to all - not just the few
Conservative ministers were considered cold

4. The Great Awakening Problems
Society too modern to share in Jonathan Edward’s vision
God’s sovereignty and humanity’s helplessness
Did not want to depend on God’s grace
Too many religious sects caused people to doubt any one could be completely right
Many did not like the uneducated becoming ministers - said it led to mistakes
Salvation for all encouraged the idea of equal rights as well on earth
