1 Results of the Survey on Mining and Quarrying Waste Statistics
Jürgen Gonser ARGUS, Berlin Workshop on mining waste, 11./12. October 2011

2 Survey on Extractive Waste Statistics
Intention of the survey: to gain a better understanding of differences between countries to identify the need for clarification and guidance to provide a basis for proposals to harmonise reporting on extractive wastes Workshop on mining waste, 11./12. October 2011

3 Survey on Extractive Waste Statistics
Information collected from countries: Problems encountered and need for clarification Main waste generating activities carried out by extractive industries in the country Main waste types generated by extractive industries coverage of national data with regard to: main waste categories waste treatment facilities Workshop on mining waste, 11./12. October 2011

4 Waste generating activities in NACE B
Workshop on mining waste, 11./12. October 2011

5 Main waste types generated (1)
Workshop on mining waste, 11./12. October 2011

6 Main waste types generated (2)
Workshop on mining waste, 11./12. October 2011

7 Coverage of waste statistics
Workshop on mining waste, 11./12. October 2011

8 Coverage of waste statistics
Main reasons for complete or partial exclusion from reporting: Not considered as waste: mainly for topsoil also for clean inert wastes (IE, PT, ..) Waste is managed on the site where it is generated, mostly for recovery purposes (backfilling, etc.) Workshop on mining waste, 11./12. October 2011

9 Coverage of waste statistics
Waste generated in NACE B related to population (2008) Workshop on mining waste, 11./12. October 2011

10 Problems encountered (1)
Uncertainty about what should be reported: distinction between waste and non-waste what is the scope to the WStatR Uncertainty about definition and classification of treatment operations Lack of guidance on these issues Limited comparability even on national level Management of extractive waste may be regulated under mining law and not under waste legislation. Workshop on mining waste, 11./12. October 2011

11 Problems encountered (2)
Lack of expertise in environmental administration or statistical institutes Problems around estimating tonnages where waste is no weighed (e.g. stockpiled material) Considerable variation of waste amounts from one year to another Uncertainty about how to report extractive waste generated under other NACE sections Workshop on mining waste, 11./12. October 2011

12 Conclusions In order to achieve harmonised reported the following is necessary: Clarification of what should be reported: which materials / waste types? which treatment operations? Once these question are clarified guidance should be provided in order to safeguard a consistent implementation Workshop on mining waste, 11./12. October 2011
