2 Directions Look through the Powerpoint slides. On a piece of paper, write what you think about each person/group of people in the picture. What do you imagine they would be like? What kind of people do you think they would hang out with? Write as much as possible for each slide.

13 Discussion Questions What kinds of words did you use to describe people? Compare two very different descriptions you wrote. Why did you describe these people differently? What kinds of things did you see that led you to make different judgments about these people? We all make judgments about other people, including strangers. What kinds of things do you look for in strangers to decide “who they are”?

Compare Ponyboy’s personality and the way that others judge him. Do you think he fits into the stereotype of a “hood”? Why or why not?

16 What is Identity? Identity = who you are.
Self Identity = who you believe that you are Sometimes the way that other people see you does not match up with the way that you see yourself. Factors that influence your identity: Family Peers/Peer Group Personality Traits Society (class, gender, education, nationality, etc.)

PEERS / PEER GROUPS How do your peers see you? How have your peers made you who you are? Do you belong to a particular “peer group”? How does this influence what people think about you? SELF-IDENTITY How would you describe yourself to someone who doesn’t know you? Who do YOU think you are? SOCIETY Based on your appearance, class, accent, gender, education, etc., how do you think society sees you? What do you think a stranger would say about you if they saw you walking down the street (whether this is correct or not) FAMILY How does your family see you? How has your family made you who you are? PERSONALITY TRAITS What are your personality traits that make you who you are??
