1 DNA Replication

2 Central Dogma Central Dogma categorized by: DNA Replication → Transcription → Translation Basis of everything we need to know about DNA and proteins

3 DNA Replication Watson and Crick discovered not only the structure of DNA, but explained the way it duplicated/copied Each strand of DNA has the information to reconstruct the other half by using base pairing

4 DNA Replication In Prokaryotes: In Eukaryotes:
Replication begins at a single point and proceeds until the chromosome is replicated In Eukaryotes: DNA Replication occurs at hundreds of places

5 DNA Replication Steps of DNA Replication:
1) An enzyme, called Topoisomerase, winds and unwinds the double helix structure to prepare for replication 2) An enzyme, Helicase, separates DNA into two strands (Leading Strand and Lagging Strand) at a point called a replication fork 3) DNA Polymerase, principal enzyme involved in DNA Replication, adds complementary base pairs to each strand

6 DNA Replication 4) DNA Ligase link together the complementary bases to form the new strand of DNA 5) DNA Polymerase comes back through to proofread each strand Final Product: 2 new, identical strands of DNA
