2 What is it? Art movement of the late 19th century started in France
Used strokes of bright colors and optical mixing Intended to reproduce effects of light Captured everyday subjects: people, landscapes, still life.

3 Why is it called that? An art critic originally used the term as an insult Based on the title of Monet’s painting, Impression, Sunrise (1872)

5 What made it different? It broke all the rules!
Subjects: came from real life, not history Place: painted outdoors to capture light, not in a studio Technique: used bright colors applied with strong brushstrokes, not dark colors carefully applied to appear most realistic Optical blending Simplified forms
