PROTECTING HUMAN HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Today we are going to look at 3 organizations that are dedicated to improving human health and the environment: U.S. Centers for Disease Control U.S. Environmental Protection Agency World Health Organization First, let’s look at the CDC.

Mission Statement of the CDC “CDC works 24/7 to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

CDC increases the health security of our nation
CDC increases the health security of our nation. As the nation’s health protection agency, CDC saves lives and protects people from health threats. To accomplish our mission, CDC conducts critical science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise.

What does the CDC do? What is its role in the 21st century?

On the cutting edge of health security – confronting global disease threats through advanced computing and lab analysis of huge amounts of data to quickly find solutions.

Putting science into action – tracking disease and finding out what is making people sick and the most effective ways to prevent it.

Helping medical care – bringing new knowledge to individual health care and community health to save more lives and reduce waste.

Fighting diseases before they reach our borders – detecting and confronting new germs and diseases around the globe to increase our national security.

Nurturing public health - building on our significant contribution to have strong, well-resourced public health leaders and capabilities at national, state and local levels to protect Americans from health threats.

Now let’s look at another organization, one that strives to keep our environment healthy and safe. It’s a division of the U.S. Department of Energy called the Environmental Protection Agency.

What does the Environmental Protection Agency do
What does the Environmental Protection Agency do? The mission of the EPA is to protect health and the environment. To accomplish this mission, the EPA develops and enforces regulations concerning things such as:

AIR QUALITY

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

POLLUTION PREVENTION

PRODUCT LABELING

WASTE MANAGEMENT

WATER QUALITY

Finally, let’s look at the World Health Organization and what they do.

WHO is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters.  WHO works in countries all over the world and shares the following facts on preventing disease through healthy environments.

Approximately 1.2 billion people in the world live in extreme poverty (less than one dollar per day). Poverty creates ill-health because it forces people to live in environments that make them sick, without decent shelter, clean water, or adequate sanitation.

Worldwide, 13 million deaths could be prevented every year by making our environments healthier.

In children under the age of five, one third of all disease is caused by the environmental factors such as unsafe water and air pollution.

Every year, the lives of four million children under 5 years – mostly in developing countries – could be saved by preventing environmental risks such as unsafe water and polluted air.

In developing countries, the main environmentally caused diseases are diarrheal disease, lower respiratory infections, unintentional injuries, and malaria.

Better environmental management could prevent 40% of deaths from malaria, 41% of deaths from lower respiratory infections, and 94% of deaths from diarrheal disease – three of the world's biggest childhood killers.

In the least developed countries, one third of death and disease is a direct result of environmental causes.

In developed countries, healthier environments could significantly reduce the incidence of cancers, cardiovascular diseases, asthma, lower respiratory infections, musculoskeletal diseases, road traffic injuries, poisonings, and drowning.

Environmental factors influence 85 out of the 102 categories of diseases and injuries listed in The world health report.

Much of this death, illness and disability could be prevented through well targeted interventions such as promoting safe household water storage, better hygiene measures and the use of cleaner and safer fuels.

Other interventions that can make environments healthier include: increasing the safety of buildings; promoting safe, careful use and management of toxic substances at home and in the workplace; and better water resource management.

Clearly it is safer and healthier to live in a clean environment
Clearly it is safer and healthier to live in a clean environment. But what happens when people get sick or need preventive care? The World Health Organization advocates that everyone should have access to the health services they need without being forced into poverty when paying for them.

Let’s watch this short video produced by the World Health Organization that shows how different countries around the world handle the medical care of their citizens. Video link is under the PP on the website.
