The best reading/analyzing skill you will ever learn (‘fo realsies!)
Marking up a Text The best reading/analyzing skill you will ever learn (‘fo realsies!)
2
Why? What might be the point of marking up a text? (making notes, underlining things etc.)? Have you done it before and has it helped? Why/How does it help?
3
“I want to persuade you to "WRITE between the lines
“I want to persuade you to "WRITE between the lines." UNLESS you do, you are not likely to do the most efficient kind of reading. I contend, quite bluntly, that marking up a book is not an act of mutilation but of LOVE.”
4
“You buy a beefsteak and transfer it from the butcher's icebox to your own.
But you do not OWN the beefsteak in the most important sense until you consume it and get it into your bloodstream. I am arguing that books, too, MUST be absorbed in your bloodstream to do you any good.”
5
“You may say that this business of marking books is going to SLOW up your reading. It probably will. That's one of the reasons for doing it.” What might be some of the benefits of reading more slowly and thoroughly?
6
“In the case of good books, the point is not to see how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through YOU”
7
Why else? When you mark up a book:
-You have notes to use later to write essays, have discussions, etc. -You remember the story and key points better -You can reread notes to refresh your memory rather than having to reread the whole book -It makes you an ACTIVE reader rather than a passive reader. What does it mean to be active? Passive? What’s the difference between active and passive reading?
8
...And, it will make you smarter!
Have a CONVERSATION with the text/author. Think of reading like a relationship. You MUST communicate or your love will DIE *If this relationship is going to work, you need to do your part too!
9
#1 rule for a good analysis= MARK UP THE TEXT
Just Do It #1 rule for a good analysis= MARK UP THE TEXT --Use notes, sticky notes, underline, circle, highlight with pen, pencil, human blood, whatever it takes to put your thinking on the page --MAKE and RECORD comments because YOU WILL FORGET!!! --The BEST way to write an essay from a poem, short story, novel, what have you–is to MAKE NOTES FIRST. --You don’t want to have to reread the entire thing again!!!
10
What should I look for? -Key phrases, things that strike you as you read -Main ideas, messages, hidden meanings -literary elements -Tone (objective/subjective), mood, metaphor, simile, symbolism, repetition, imagery, foreshadowing, allusions (references to other texts, events, people etc.)
11
-Mark as you go and then go back and underline key
phrases, things that seem important or especially pertinent or questions. --Tell the text how you really feel. --Don’t flatter it, just say it like it is. --What do you really think? Put it on the page! FIND SOMETHING INTERESTING TO READ!
