1 Checking and Editing AquaMap Outputs
Kathy Reyes FishBase Project/INCOFISH WP1 WorldFish Center INCOFISH WP3 Technical Workshop Campinas, Brazil 18-22 April 2006

2 Check if plotted distribution agrees with reported distribution in the database.

3 Edit mapping parameters
Case 1: Plot not generated for an area(s) in the map where species is described or known to occur Case 2: Plot generated for an area(s) in the map where species is not described or known to occur

4 Possible Actions/Solutions
Checking FAO Area data/bounding box extents (sample) Adjust environmental envelope - check species summary for additional info - sample available point data - characteristic parameters of key areas (sample) Adding “good cells” - geographic coordinates from literature, other species databases, gazetteer - expert input - direct entry of coordinates or select from map Deselecting point data

7 Examples Key Areas Arafura – very shallow depth (~50m) Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Persian Gulf – high salinity Yellow Sea, Black Sea, Sea of Okhotsk – low salinity

9 Getting Expert Input vague distribution (ex. point data for circumglobal species) finding “good cells” (ex. 10 gc requirement; area of known occurrence but w/o occurrence data) outliers from a reliable source bimodality in environmental parameter distribution species with unknown or under-investigated taxonomic status difficulty fitting distribution after changing more than 2 environmental parameters < back

12 Document changes with screen capture of initial and edited versions of species distribution map.
Ex. Abudefduf saxatilis – strictly Atlantic species; removed FAO Areas 51, 57 and 71 from FAO areas record Initial version Final version
