1 Lesson 2 Introductory Algebra Powers and Exponents

2 Warm-Up 20 ÷ – 3 3 × 3 × 3 1 × 1 × 1 × 1 × 1

3 Target: Write and compute expressions with powers.
Powers and Exponents Target: Write and compute expressions with powers.

4 Vocabulary Power: Used when a numerical expression is the product of a repeated factor. It consists of two parts: the base and the exponent. Base: The repeated factor. Exponent: Number of times the factor is repeated. Squared: The second power. Cubed: The third power.

5 Powers, Bases and Exponents
Expanded Form

6

7 Example 1 Write the numerical expression as a power. 6 × 6 × 6 × 6 64
4 × 4 42 9 × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9 97

8 Example 2 Write each power in expanded form and find the value. 32
3 × 3 = 9 15 1 × 1 × 1 × 1 × 1 = 1 43 4 × 4 × 4 = 64

9 Exit Problems Write 5 × 5 × 5 × 5 as a power.
Write 43 in expanded form and find its value. Determine which power has the greater value: 16 or 22.

10 Communication Prompt What is the process you would follow to find the value of 34 without using a calculator?
