5 Why Migration and not Upgrade?
Provides a transition path from: x86 to x64 OS (anything after Windows server 2008 is x64 only) Physical to virtual (and vice versa) Full server to server core (and vice versa) Clean operating system installs Reduces risk and downtime OS installation and most migration tasks are performed while the source server is still live Allows migration verification and performance benchmarking prior to bringing the target server “online” Source server remains available for back out scenarios

6 End of support for Windows Server 2003/R2
Optimistic Estimates Server migration: 200 days Application migration: 300+ days 12/1/2018

7 No updates No updates No compliance No compliance No safe haven
What end of support means No updates No updates No compliance No compliance No safe haven Lack of PCI compliance could mean that Visa and MasterCard will no longer do business with your organization No safe haven Now is the time to act 37 critical updates released in 2013 for Windows Server 2003/R2 Impact on both physical and virtualized servers Start planning your migration and transforming your datacenter today Windows 2003/R2 servers will not pass a compliance audit Impact on Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 Increased operations costs Discontinued support for many applications

10 The Pledge I promise to do my due diligence, To plan my upgrades,
To backup my system before I touch anything. I promise to take more time than the length of this session to perform my upgrade. So help me Bill, Steve. Satya !

11 Prepare the Migration Tools
Verify that the source server has sufficient disk space (at least 23 MB) Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is installed on computers that are running Windows Server 2003 Windows PowerShell 1.0 or later, is installed on computers that are running Windows Server 2003

12 Prepare Migration tools
Install feature on Windows Server 2012 R2 Install-WindowsFeature Migration -ComputerName <TargetName> Once Installed – Prepare the package for the 2003 servers. Smigdeploy.exe /package /architecture Amd64 /OS WS03 /Path <TargetPath> Copy the package to the local 2003 servers Execute SMigDeploy.exe from the 2003 servers Done!

13 Migrate your DNS Easiest part of your migration
12/1/2018 Migrate your DNS Easiest part of your migration Active Directory integrated zone Introduce a Windows Server 2012 R2 DC with the DNS role installed in your domain Allow to Replicate Update DHCP with new DNS address or Change server address to match old one. Done! Stand-Alone DNS Export and copy Zone configuration and zone files to target machine Import Zone configuration and zone files © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 14 Migrating your Active Directory
12/1/2018 Migrating your Active Directory Prerequisites Current Domain Functional Level is at least Windows 2003 mode. Promote a Windows Server 2012 R2 to DC status. Allow to replicate Transfer FSMO roles Demote Windows Server 2003 DC Remove Windows Server 2003 from domain Set domain and forest Functional Levels appropriately © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. 15 Migrating DHCP Match NIC number from source to target servers
12/1/2018 Migrating DHCP Match NIC number from source to target servers Identify which scope are bound to which NICs Export all settings from the source server Stop the DHCP server first De-authorize from Active Directory Install DHCP service on target server Import settings in the target server Start server Authorize DHCP server Retire old DHCP server © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. 16 Migrating File Shares & DFS
12/1/2018 Migrating File Shares & DFS Environment Verify that the data locations for the destination server have sufficient free space Open port UDP 7000 & TCP 7000 on destination server Use the same drive letters for the destination server volumes Do not allow users to access the destination server until migration is fully completed The DFS Namespaces Join DFS Namespace and use the replication service to Migrate the data Once the replication is complete remove the 2003 server from the namespace Other Shares and Data Use the Send-SmigServerData  Receive-SmigServerData cmdlet from the migration tools and Migrate the shares and data. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. 17 Migrating Print Servers
Verify that the new versions of the drivers are available Use built in tools… don’t re-invent the wheel Use Server Manager to Install Print Server and management tools on the Windows Server 2012 R2 machine Use the export\import capabilities in the tool. Once Migrated retire 2003 server Remove from the domain Shutdown and turn off (forever!!! ) In DNS add CNAME record to point your source server name to your target server name (you wont need to re-map printers!)

18 Now What? Remember the Pledge. Take this as an opportunity
Take an inventory of your environment Identify services to Migrate Plan, Plan, Plan… Take this as an opportunity Do you still need the service? Is this an opportunity to move to the cloud? DCIM-B376 Windows Server 2003 End of Life Migration Planning for Your Workloads
