3 6.1 The Nature of Energy Temperature vs. Heat:
Temperature reflects the random motions of the particles in a particular substance Heat involves the transfer of energy between two objects due to a temperature difference Ways to transfer energy: Work Heat When energy is transferred, the total energy transferred is constant; however, the amount of heat and work involved depend upon the pathway. A change in a state function is independent of the pathway Energy is a state function Work and heat are NOT state functions
