3 Need To prevent reversing of vehicles on slopes when brakes of the vehicle are released so as to accelerate the vehicle upwards on the slope without having to operate the accelerator brake and clutch at the same time.

4 Aim To prevent vehicles from reversing while accelerating the vehicle from rest position on a positive Slope.

5 Review Of Literature Assisting Starting off on a Slope
This technology allows drivers to change pedals easily from the brake to the accelerator and carry out a safer hill start. When a driver changes pedals from brake to accelerator, the system maintains the brake pressure for a maximum of two seconds after the driver’s foot has left the brake pedal. An acceleration sensor using VDC or Vehicle Dynamic Control detects when the vehicle is on a slope.

6 Review Of Literature When a driver changes pedals from brake to accelerator, the system maintains the brake pressure for a maximum of two seconds after the driver’s foot has left the brake pedal. An acceleration sensor using VDC or Vehicle Dynamic Control detects when the vehicle is on a slope. It does not engage on flat road but when a slope is detected by the sensor, the brake pressure applied by the driver stepping on the brake pedal is maintained for a maximum of two seconds after the driver releases their foot. When the driver operates the accelerator, the brake pressure is unlocked.

Components 1.Lock 2.Hub 3.Slider 4.Actuating Mechanism 5.Supports

8 Lock

9 It has two faces a flat one and a curved one.
The flat face prevents the vehicle from reversing down a slope. The curved surface allows the hub to slip allowing forward motion.

10 Hub

11 Hub has four slots at 90 degrees as shown in the figure.
It is co-axially mounted on the rear axle. Two hubs are used.

12 Slider

13 Slider The device has two sliders with stoppers.
They are welded to the chassis of the vehicle. The primary function of the slider is to allow smooth sliding of the lock. It also helps in supporting the lock when in disengaged position.

14 Actuating Mechanism

15 ROD

16 ROD AND BEARING The actuating mechanism consists of a Tie rod and M.S. rods. The function of tie rod is to give both lateral and longitudinal motion.

17 Supports There are 3 supports at specific positions which support the motion of M.S. rods. The supports are welded to the chassis.

18 Construction It consists of two hubs mounted on the rear axle.
Each hubs have four slots at 90 degrees. A lever with two branches have locks attached to their ends.

19 Working

20 Working When the lever is actuated the locks slide in the slots of the hub on the axle. It stops the axle in its place preventing the vehicle from going in reverse. When the lever is retracted, the vehicle is free to move in both forward and reverse directions. This helps the driver to easily drive the vehicle in forward direction from rest position when the vehicle is on a slope.

21 Design Analysis CONSIDERING α=30° Weight of the vehicle(W)=200kg
Torque of engine(Te)=10.8 N.m For safe design considering F.O.S=4.5 Torque due to weight of vehicle(Tw) = mgSinα×radius of wheel

22 Design Analysis

23 Design Analysis Calculation of Resultant Force
Resultant Torque Acting (T) = Tw-Te Considering Tangential Forces acting due to Torque Tangential force due to weight of the vehicle (Fw) Tangential force due to torque of engine (Fe) Resultant Force = Fw-Fe Te = Fe × perpendicular distance of sproket 10.8 = Fe × 0.075 Fe = 144 N Fw = mgSinα=200×10×Sin30°=1000N

24 Design Analysis Calculation of Resultant Force Design of Lock
Resultant Force = 856 N By considering F.O.S =4.5 F =3856 N The above force is total force acting the lock. Therefore each lock F/2=3865/2=1928N Design of Lock Material :- Brass Shear Strength :- 100 N/mm² Bending Strenght :- 200 N/mm²

25 Design Analysis Design of Lock Bending stress=m×y/I

26 Design Analysis Shear Stress = F/A= 1928/35×9 Design of Hub
Material :- AISI 1018 Shear Strength :- 185 N/mm² Crushing Strength :- 370 N/mm² Failure of hub in crushing Crushing Stress = F/A = 1928/25×9 Crushing Stress =8.565 N/mm² <370 N/mm² Failure of hub in Shear Shear Stress = F/A= 1928/35×9 Shear Stress =6.12 N/mm² <185 N/mm²

30 COST Vs UTILITY The utility of the mechanism is throughout the life of vehicle, but it is in active mode whenever the car is on a slope. As, it is completely mechanical innovation it is but obvious less costly. But proves to be effective at times and also can decrease the chances of mishap.

31 SCOPE This system can be incorporated in commercial vehicles.
This system can be incorporated in commercial vehicles. It can also be used to restrict the forward motion of the vehicle, while reversing the car on downhill.
