1 Warm Up #5 What are some systems that you can think of within Earth?

2 Lesson 1: Earth Systems and Interactions
Ch. 1 The Earth Systems Lesson 1: Earth Systems and Interactions

3 Essential Questions How do Earth systems interact in the carbon cycle?
How do Earth systems interact in the phosphorus cycle?

4 How do Earth systems interact? Activity
Examine the pictures given with your group. Discuss how they interact with each other.

5 Earth Systems Atmosphere – mixture of gases and particles of matter
Forms layers around the other Earth systems Mainly nitrogen and oxygen Move freely, helping transport matter and energy among Earth systems Hydrosphere – all Earth’s water Below atmosphere Continuously moves from place to place

6 Earth Systems Geosphere – largest system, solid Earth
Includes thin layer of soil and rocks on Earth’s surface and underlying layers of Earth Materials move more slowly Why do materials move slowly within the geosphere? Biosphere – all living things on Earth

7 Water Cycle A continuous movement of water on, above,
and below Earth’s surface. BrainPOP – Water Cycle

8 Rock Cycle A series of processes that change rocks from one form to
another the amount of material cycling through each system remains constant, but it might change state or form Looking at your picture: How do sedimentary rocks form? Where do metamorphic rocks form?

9 Warm Up #6 How do different systems interact with each other?

10 Carbon Cycle The series of processes that continuously move
carbon among Earth systems Looking at your picture: Give an example of how the atmosphere and the geosphere interact in the carbon cycle? How would the carbon cycle be affected if the rate of photosynthesis increased? Which processes add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere? Which processes remove it?

11 Carbon Cycle The series of processes that continuously move carbon among Earth systems Greenhouse gases – gases in the atmosphere that absorb and reradiate thermal energy from the Sun. Why are these gases important?

12 Phosphorus Cycle The series of processes that move phosphorus among Earth systems How can a lack of phosphorus affect organisms? Looking at your picture: how does the water cycle affect the phosphorus cycle? What happens to phosphate that is dissolved in water? How do living things affect the phosphorus cycle?
