4. Introduction to the Novel
-George Orwell” was the pen name of Eric Blair.
-Orwell was an Englishman born in India in He died at age 47.
-Orwell was educated at Eton, a prestigious boarding school in England.
-Decided to skip college and work as a British Imperial Policeman in Burma
-Hated working in Burma and returned to England on sick-leave
-Once back in England he dedicated himself to writing full time.
-1984 was written in 1948

5. Orwell’s Political Views
-He considered himself a democratic socialist and was critical of communism
-He hated intellectuals, lying, cruelty, political authority, and totalitarianism
-He strongly opposed Stalin and Hitler -- he was very outspoken during WWII

6. The World in George Orwell’s time
-WWII ravaged Europe and parts of Asia, leaving human wreckage everywhere.
-The atrocities of WWII are still fresh in people’s minds

-Used by Nazis and Soviets to find dissenters, people who opposed their rule, or people with differing political ideas
-People punished and most often killed

9. Why this novel was banned
-It ranks as high as #5 most challenged book of all time.
-The book was published in 1949 (cold war age) age where communism was spreading and people grew scared of it (also a relatively conservative time) Just the same year this book was published, a communist government took over China By this time the Red Scare had begun in the USA.
-Banned and burned in the U.S.S.R. under Stalin's rule for its' negative attitude toward communism (reading it could've resulted in your arrest!)
It has also been banned and challenged in many U.S. schools.
During the Cold War, a teacher in Wrenshall, Minnesota was fired for refusing to remove 1984 from his reading list. In 1981, it was challenged in Jackson County, Florida
Ironic because this book is all about censorship!

11. Setting
-“1984″ takes place in dystopian London during a futuristic age

12. -a dictator, Big Brother, has control over all of the citizens.
-They are constantly reminded, “Big Brother is watching” through devices called telescreens that are mandatory in each home.

13. -Citizens can be punished, or even “vaporized” for any action or thought — called a thoughtcrime — against the government.
-We meet Winston, a reporter at the Ministry of Truth whose job it is to alter past news reports so they match up with whatever Big Brother says at the time. He keeps a diary about his complaints against the government — a crime punishable by death, to be sure.
