In a vertical root (left), auxin is thought to travel (red arrows) down the stele from the elongation zone to the root cap, from where it is transported laterally and then back up the epidermal layer to the elongation zone. When the root is horizontal (right, top), more auxin is transported to the bottom tissues, inhibiting their growth and leading to downward bending (right, bottom).
