1 Biological Levels of Organisation

2 At The Chemical Level Sub-atomic Particles Atom Molecule
The nucleus of the atom is made up of protons and neutrons with electrons spinning in shells around the nucleus. Atom The unit of an element that retains the properties of that element. Molecule Atoms combine to form molecules.

3 At The Cellular Level Organelle The Cell
Small, organised structures, (made of molecules), inside a cell that have different functions The Cell The basic unit of life made up of a number of organelles.

4 At The Multi-cellular Level
Tissues A group of cells with the same function. Organs A group of tissues with the same function forms an organ. Organ Systems Several organs work together in an organ system Organism All organ systems combine to make an individual.

5 At The Ecological Level
Population Members of one species living in an area. Community All the populations in an area. Ecosystem All the biotic and abiotic factors. Biome A large scale ecosystem. Biosphere All living things on Earth, plus the abiotic factors.

6 Levels Of Biological Organisation
An atom is made up of sub-atomic particles: protons, neutrons and electrons. A bio-molecule is made up of atoms. A cell is formed out of bio-molecules (on their own, or as organelles that perform specific functions within a cell).

7 Levels Of Biological Organisation
An organ is made up of tissues of cells. Several organs may work together as an organ system. An individual is made up of organ systems.

8 Levels Of Biological Organisation
A population is a group of similar organisms. A community is a collection of populations. An ecosystem consists of a community and its environment. A biome is a large-scale ecosystem.

9 Levels Of Biological Organisation
The biosphere is the life-supporting surface of the Earth. Key = Micro-level = Macro-level * The individual lies between these levels.
