1 Citizenship Ms. Scott 5th Grade

2 Amendment A change or addition to the U.S. Constitution
The first 10 amendments to the Constitution are known as The Bill of Rights.

3 Citizen A member of a state or nation
Every citizen in the United States has the right to vote when they turn 18.

4 Constitution The system of principals, or rules, in which our government is made up of The Constitution is written so that it can be changed, or amended, at any time.

5 Civil Rights The rights of every U.S. citizen by law
Many African American leaders spoke up for civil rights in the 60s when segregation was still in effect in the south.

6 Due Process Fair treatment by the government through the judicial system when someone is accused of committing a crime The government must follow due process to make sure that a person’s civil rights are not violated.

7 Ratify To officially approve
I wish my teacher would ratify a longer recess!!!

8 Representative Democracy
A type of democracy founded on the principle of elected officials representing a group of people Since the United States is a representative democracy, we vote for people to represent us in our government.

9 Suffrage The right to vote
Many people including African Americans, woman, and poor white men fought for suffrage because originally only rich white men who owned land could vote.
