1 Chapter 13 AP Physics C: Fluids A
Density of fluids =mass/volume  ρ =m/v STP=1 atm and 0oC

2 Pressure in a Fluid P=F/A 1Pa=1N/m2 . 1 atm=101.321 kPa=14.7 lb/in2
The pressure of a fluid at a depth h is: Pd =Po + ρgh where ρ=density and g=9.81 m/s2 Pd=pressure at depth h Po = atmoshperic pressure above the fluid See practice problems 13-2 and 13-3 p378-p379

3 Bulk Modulus B or K is the symbol used for bulk modulus…
This is the compressibility of a fluid. The more difficult a fluid is to compress, the smaller is Δ V/V for a given pressure.

4 Pascal’s Principle Pascal's law or the principle of transmission of fluid-pressure (also Pascal's Principle) is a principle in fluid mechanics that states that pressure exerted anywhere in a confined incompressible fluid is transmitted equally in all directions throughout the fluid.

5 Pascal’s Principle

6 Buoyancy and Archimedes’ Principle
Archimedes’ principle states that a body wholly or partially submerged in a fluid is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the water displaced. Submerged weight = weighto in air –weightloss Specific gravity= weightair /weightloss when submerged

7 Archimedes’ Crown

8 Archimedes’ Formula Do/Df=Weighto/(Weight-Apparent immersed wt.)

9 Calculating Buoyancy See Example 13-7 p383 Set FB=Fw
DoVg=DwV’g where V’ = submerged V Work through the sample problems.
