Canterbury Tales is an account of pilgrims traveling to the site of the martyrdom of Thomas Becket in the Canterbury Cathedral. “Life is a journey” is often used to describe how changes and experiences in your life create a story. Journeys are a metaphor for experiences which transform you. What experiences and changes have you had over your school years since kindergarten?

Do you believe that all people may be characterized by types? In high school, students are often known by the group, crowd, or clique to which they belong. Chaucer describes characters as examples of types. Describe a type of student in our high school who might be thought of as a type.

What can characters tell us about society? What would you say about the characters at our school as you discussed in yesterday’s character types? What do the character types at high school tell us about society in general.

5. Descriptive writing uses details to create a picture of a person’s appearance, belongings, and behavior. Describe someone you know well without naming the person in such a way that would allow someone else who knows the person to recognize the individual in your writing.
