Independent evaluation of scholarly work WHO is invited? Those in the field who know the area and can evaluate the quality and contributions of your work fairly and objectively At least Associate or Full One international preferred Associate editors or editors; credible publication record

3 Outside Letters WHO is NOT invited? Co-authors
Dissertation Committee members Multiple professors from one school Friends Those outside research area Objective is to have “independent” evaluators ** we keep track of number asked, those that decline & why they decline

Candidate’s suggestions Senior faculty DOF Those you have cited Editors and review boards of journals where you have published

5 Outside Letters Process Invitation by email
Sometimes a phone call with evaluators Materials sent 2-3 months before the deadline Letter with details about Babson’s tenure process Research statement 2-4 samples of published scholarly materials CV

6 Outside Letters What Outside Evaluators will Do:
Read everything carefully Personal statement- what is your research identity? Analyze CV- gaps, journal quality (impact factors), # pubs, # presentations, work in process, solo and joint authored, 1st authored, citation counts, teaching load, teaching ratings, other Compare to others who graduated in the same year Compare to others who are at similar schools

7 Outside Letters What YOU can Do Friendly reviews of your papers
Present at conferences Go to presentations of those doing similar work Work on your personal statement, get lots of feedback and make sure it is a well crafted document Be clear about your research identity in your PS Make sure your CV has no mistakes
