1 WHAT DO ALL OF THESE PLANTS HAVE IN COMMON?

2 Energy for Life All living things require energy to grow and reproduce
They get that energy by making it, eating it, or absorbing it

3 Glucose Most living things on Earth break down glucose to get their energy Autotrophs (plants) use a process called photosynthesis to make glucose Heterotrophs (animals) eat and then digest food to produce glucose

4 Glucose Glucose is a monosaccharide which means one sugar
There are many different models to describe glucose

5 Photosynthesis The process by which plants, and some other organisms, use radiant energy, carbon dioxide and water to make glucose and oxygen. Glucose is stored in leaves, stems and roots Oxygen is given off as a waste

6 Energy Conversion Through photosynthesis plants and some other organisms convert radiant energy chemical energy (from the sun) (stored as glucose) and energy (light) matter (leaves, stem, bark)

7 Photosynthesis Equation
6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2 carbon dioxide water glucose oxygen Sunlight Chlorophyll Reactants Products

8 Photosynthesis Once the plants produce glucose, they store it until needed. When they need energy, the glucose is broken down to release the energy inside.

9 Leaf Anatomy Sunlight can enter through the leaf’s surface
For water and carbon dioxide to enter, and oxygen to exit, leaves need a “doorway”

10 Leaf Anatomy Stomata Openings in the underside of the leaf that act as doorways for raw materials and waste to enter and exit the leaf Usually open during the day and closed at night

12 Plant Cell Chloroplasts

13 Chloroplast Small, green body inside the plant cell where photosynthesis takes place Chloroplasts can move inside the plant cell to get closer to light

14 Pigments Chemical compounds that give things color

15 Chlorophyll Green pigment found in plants where photosynthesis takes place Plants can produce more chlorophyll when they get more sunlight Photosynthesis only occurs in plant cells that have chloroplasts

16 All plants with green areas can produce food through photosynthesis.
Do you think anything else can use photosynthesis? photosynthetic bacteria photosynthetic plankton algae

17 Energy for Life Plants provide food for the entire planet
provide 90% of Earth’s oxygen filter out carbon dioxide Why is it important to save trees?
