7. Asteroids
Asteroids are rocky and metallic objects that are too small to be considered planets.
They are between 1 and 1,000 km in diameter.
They are irregularly shaped.
Made up mostly of iron and nickel.

8. Asteroids Two different theories for how they are formed.
They are remains of a planet that was destroyed in a massive collision.
Or they represent material that never formed into a planet.

9. Asteroids They do not have an atmosphere. They orbit the sun.
They are usually found in the asteroid belt.

12. Meteoroids, Meteors, and Meteorites
Meteoroids are simply smaller versions of asteroids.
Meteors are when meteoroids enter the Earth’s upper atmosphere and burn up in the process.
You can see these as streaks of light across the sky.
These are “shooting stars”
A meteorite is a portion of a large meteoroid that survived the trip through Earth’s atmosphere and land on Earth’s surface.

Comets are small bodies in space that are made up of ice, dust, gas and small particles.
You can think of them as Dirty Snowballs in space.
When they come closer to the sun the ice vaporizes
This causes the streak of gas which is referred to as its “tail”.
