1 How can you use constellations to prove Earth is moving in different ways?
8/27/18 Monday Funday!

2 Sample Example You can observe the rotation of the Earth by watching the constellations rise and set in the night sky. You can observe the revolution of Earth by observing the different constellations that appear and disappear throughout the year.

3 Homework! Unit One Test is next Thursday – Constructed response
Friday – Multiple Choice It will cover all of space Space Theories My Place in Space Space Motion Inner Planets Outer Planets Comets, Meteoroids, and Asteroids

4 Game Plan! Together we will take notes on comets, meteoroids, and asteroids. You will work on your own to complete the notes for the Gas Gaints! Legends of Learning Tomorrow!

5 Notes on Comets, Meteoroids, Asteroids
The Notes!

6 What Makes up Our solar system?
The Sun Planets Moons Asteroid Belt Lots of Space All sorts of bits and pieces of rock

7 Asteroids Asteroids are rocky and metallic objects that are too small to be considered planets. They are between 1 and 1,000 km in diameter. They are irregularly shaped. Made up mostly of iron and nickel.

8 Asteroids Two different theories for how they are formed.
They are remains of a planet that was destroyed in a massive collision. Or they represent material that never formed into a planet.

9 Asteroids They do not have an atmosphere. They orbit the sun.
They are usually found in the asteroid belt. The area between Mars and Jupiter.

10 The Asteroid Belt It takes about 3.3-6 years to orbit the Sun.
All asteroids in the asteroid belt orbit the Sun in the same direction as planets. It takes about years to orbit the Sun. Contains 75% of known asteroids. About 100,000 asteroids in the belt.

11 Meteorite, meteoroid, meteor? What is the difference?
Do you know?

12 Meteoroids, Meteors, and Meteorites
Meteoroids are simply smaller versions of asteroids. Meteors are when meteoroids enter the Earth’s upper atmosphere and burn up in the process. You can see these as streaks of light across the sky. These are “shooting stars” A meteorite is a portion of a large meteoroid that survived the trip through Earth’s atmosphere and land on Earth’s surface.

13 comets Comets are small bodies in space that are made up of ice, dust, gas and small particles. You can think of them as Dirty Snowballs in space. When they come closer to the sun the ice vaporizes This causes the streak of gas which is referred to as its “tail”.

14 Comets! These two regions are filled with billions of comets
Places that comets come from Oort cloud Oort cloud is located beyond Pluto Kuiper Belt Kuiper Belt is located beyond Neptune These two regions are filled with billions of comets

15 Notes on planets as groups

16 The Gas Planets! You will be using the textbooks to fill out the rest of your notes on the Terrestrial Planets! Using pages 76 – 83. Remember the books are not yours yet. Be nice to my books.
