Demeter searched the world for her daughter and all her work was forgotten. she lost all interest in fertility, flowers wilted, crops stopped growing, animals ceased to multiply. .

5 Eventually Zeus sent the messenger of the gods, Hermes to tell Demeter how Pluto stole her from the fields of Sicily By the time Hermes reached the underworld Persephone had eaten some Pomegranate. This means that she has accepted Pluto's hospitality by eating his food. Zeus was called upon to make the decision of where Persephone belonged, because if she wasn’t returned to her mother the crops would continue to fail and people would no longer worship the Gods. The number of Pomegranate seeds determined the length of time she would live in the underworld.
