2 SOAR Analysis Concept: AAFC
SOAR: Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, and Results. How do we know we’ve move forward? How will we know we’ve been successful? What needs have been fulfilled? What are the greatest hopes for accessibility in Lake Country? What would you like to see improved within 3-5 years from now? What should the District capitalize on? What is possible? Where can the AAFC meet the community’s needs? What works well for accessibility in Lake Country? What are some existing examples success? What are the good things people are saying? Strengths Opportunities Results Aspirations

3 Strengths Active Transportation improvements throughout the DLC (i.e. Bottom Wood Lake Rd, Lodge Rd, Camp Rd, Greenhow and Sherman) Lake Country Food Bank Accessibility – an example of good design and advocacy Creekside Theatre Accessibility on-going, but good examples already (auris loop) Accessible new development examples in private sector within Lake Country Staff & Council motivation/passion to approach accessibility and equity issues Passion, will, and leadership to change positively Interpreters at events Communication with the Media to improve public awareness/education (past examples of DLC leadership) Utilization and on-going successes of the Access & Age-Friendly Committee Use of technology to become more accessible (i.e. social media streaming of meetings) Strong political leadership Public events becoming more accessible (i.e. Remembrance Day interpreters and seating)

Building rapport with the development & business communities Finding land in the community that is well-situated for seniors housing and close to amenities/walkable Increasing density in the Town Centre 2017 Budget Item: Housing Needs Assessment Pursuing grants for accessibility/inclusivity Partner with the private sector to streamline projects and reduce costs for accessibility improvements Creating/fostering social, accessible, and inclusive environments (built and natural) “Affordable” housing without stigma (and addressing the wide spectrum of housing needs Explore “Age in Place” concepts in greater detail Swimming pool Educate and build awareness of issues across the community (e.g. schools) Partner with nearby post-secondary institutions to run programs and improvements Improve and expand transit and handi-dart services Create a Dementia-Friendly Strategy for Lake Country IHA and healthcare hub/service expansion Becoming a multi-generational community (8-80 Community)

5 aspirations Expanded Handi-Dart services and BC Transit services in general Development of an accessible Okanagan Rail Corridor (i.e. rest stations, beach access, walkable) Development of education materials for the development, business, and wider communities Housing needs addressed across the spectrum Swimming Pool feasibility tested Greater “sense of place” in Lake Country (i.e. wayfinding, creation of “people places” and Third Spaces/inviting places) More accessible public events, arts, and culture More public seating and places to rest throughout the community Canada 150 funding for accessibility improvements, wayfinding, and culture Have plans in place to access funding when available, and make progress on accessibility, equity, and inclusivity issues Businesses awarded for accessibility/inclusion (work with the Chamber to add this as an annual award of excellence?)
