1 Southern Coastal Plains
Connecticut, Hudson, Susquehanna, Savannah, Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, Missouri Early settlements were near rivers, they provided a source of fresh water, in addition, colonist could transport goods much easier. By the time they reached the continent, they were low on supplies and immediately began to farm. Being near the coast made it easier to get supplies and ship exports to Europe. Once established, they moved westward. Atlantic Coast This region was best suited for large scale agriculture, or plantation/cash crop farming. Due to the establishment of plantations the region was rural. Southern Coastal Plains The Appalachian mountains were a barrier to early western expansion, as a result the 13 colonies developed along the Atlantic Coast between the Applachians. Appalachian Mountains These features allow for the safe docking of ships, as result some of the largest colonial cities developed. They were the most densely populated and became major centers of trade for colonial America. Massachusetts Bay, Delaware Bay Chesapeake Bay, Charleston Bay
